In Conversation with Dr. Duate Adegbite
Dr. Duate Adegbite’s journey into medicine began gradually, shaped by the people and experiences around her. From an early age, she was fortunate to have built-in mentorship within her family, as many relatives and family friends were physicians. These experiences gave her insight into the profession and a sense of what was possible. She always knew she wanted a career where she could make a meaningful impact and improve people’s lives, and this desire, combined with her early exposure to medicine, guided her toward family medicine.
Her own experiences navigating the healthcare system as a Black woman have deeply influenced her approach to patient care. She recalls how, before anyone knew she was a physician, she experienced bias in healthcare settings simply because of her age and skin colour. Once her role was recognized, the treatment she received would shift, highlighting the assumptions that patients often face.
Dr. Adegbite is intentional with every patient interaction, especially during sensitive exams. Rather than making assumptions, she offers choices, asking whether someone prefers a detailed walkthrough or a quieter approach. If having another person in the room would help, she makes that option available. She explains each step beforehand, creating a gentler, safer experience for patients who may already feel vulnerable in healthcare settings.
Trauma-informed care guides this approach. She recognizes that many patients may have experienced trauma and works to make exams as sensitive and comfortable as possible through clear explanations and patient-led choices. Beyond the exam room, she builds trust by listening fully, giving patients time to share their concerns, and speaking in a warm, conversational tone. This helps normalize discussions about sexual and reproductive health and reassures patients that their concerns are valid.
The idea for Imana Health grew directly from these experiences. While working in sexual health clinics, Dr. Adegbite spoke with a young patient who shared that she learned about health issues through TikTok. For Dr. Adegbite, this was a moment of clarity. She realized that many young people, especially those without access to trusted healthcare providers, were relying on social media for health information, which was often inaccurate or incomplete. Alongside her co-founder Dr. Nena-Rae Watson, she developed Imana Health to provide evidence-based education and products. Their first product, Muna probiotic designed to prevent recurrent yeast infections, was paired with vitamin D, addressing a deficiency that disproportionately affects Black women in Canada. The initiative combines accurate health information with practical solutions, reflecting Dr. Adegbite’s belief in empowering patients through knowledge and accessible care.
Looking ahead, Dr. Adegbite hopes to expand her impact through a women’s sexual health clinic in underserved areas, staffed by women of colour. She envisions a space where patients feel safe, heard, and represented, and where access to quality healthcare is coupled with education and community engagement. On a broader scale, she aims to reach patients through social media, to expand and promote the reach of Black female physcians and continue providing accessible and patient-centred care.
For Dr. Adegbite, the most rewarding moments are those when patients find answers they have been seeking or feel validated after previous experiences of being dismissed. She recalls countless interactions in clinics where gratitude and relief remind her why she chose medicine. These moments of connection are a source of joy and reaffirm the importance of listening, respecting, and caring deeply for every patient.
Dr. Adegbite’s work reflects a commitment to addressing gaps in healthcare for underrepresented groups. From creating innovative health solutions to providing culturally informed, patient-centred care, she strives to combine clinical excellence with compassion. Her journey illustrates the power of visibility, thoughtful care, and the dedication required to create lasting impact for patients and communities alike.
