Why we’re growing ROOTS
For Black medical students and internationally trained graduates, medicine is about more than getting through training. Mentorship, guidance, education, professional connections and community can make a real difference along the way.
BPAO’s Medical Learners portfolio already provides this support through mentorship and sponsorship, learner webinars, student events, exam and learning supports, and programming for internationally trained graduates.
But limited funding has meant scaling back some programs and limiting what we can offer. We don’t want that to continue.
That’s why we’re launching ROOTS, with a goal of raising $50,000 to strengthen the Medical Learners portfolio and help us continue supporting learners throughout their journey.
Because nobody grows alone.
Meet the learners behind ROOTS
Get to know the learners BPAO supports and the experiences shaping their journeys in medicine.
Tap a face in the tree to read that learner's story, in their own words.
Have you taken part in a BPAO program, or do you know someone who has?
Maybe it was a mentor, a mock exam, a webinar, or a placement that made the difference. We would love to hear how BPAO supported you, and your story could be the next face on the tree.

Help our tree grow
Every tree starts with a seed. Roots starts the same way. Every gift is a little water that helps it grow. As support comes in, the tree begins to take shape, from the first shoots to new leaves, branches and, ultimately, a growing tree.
Your gift could bring us to $0.

Other ways you can help the tree grow
There are many ways to support ROOTS!
Explore the options to the right to find the best way for you, your business or your organization to get involved.
-
Make a monthly gift
Choose a monthly amount that works for you.
Regular gifts give BPAO more consistent support to plan and continue providing mentorship, educational opportunities and community for medical learners throughout the year.
-
Corporate and foundation giving
Does your company, clinic, professional association or foundation support education, health equity or the future of healthcare? Consider making a contribution through your organization or introducing ROOTS to the people responsible for community giving.
To discuss partnership opportunities, please contact our Executive Director at ed@bpao.org
-
Celebrate someone who helped you grow
Recognize a mentor, physician, colleague or someone who made a difference in your journey with a gift in their honour.
It's a meaningful way to celebrate the people who have helped shape your path while supporting the next generation of Black physicians.
-
Personal Fundraising
Celebrate a birthday, graduation or career milestone by inviting friends, family or colleagues to give to ROOTS instead of buying a gift. You could also organize a fundraising challenge with your classmates, workplace or professional network.
-
Check for workplace matching
Some employers match charitable donations made by their employees. If yours has a matching program, your employer may contribute an additional amount when you donate to ROOTS, helping the campaign raise more without requiring you to increase your own gift.
How it works: Check with your HR team or workplace giving program to see whether ROOTS is eligible, then follow their process to request a match.
-
Share the campaign
You don't have to make a donation to help. Share ROOTS with your classmates, colleagues, physician network or friends.
You never know who might be able to contribute or connect BPAO with a potential supporter.
